At 12:30 a.m. on March 29, 1977, the scalloper Donna Lynn was rammed by a 682-foot Israeli cargo ship, the Zim Genova, about 20 miles south-southeast of Shinnecock Inlet, on Long Island, New York. Bernardo "Barney" Lopes was lost over the side. The other twelve members of the crew survived. A search by the Coast Guard and the crews of nearby vessels failed to recover Mr. Lopes' body. The Donna Lynn returned to New Bedford and docked at Fairhaven Marine.
The survivors included Captain Francis E. Carter and crew member Albert L. Doucette.
