At 12:30 a.m. on March 29, 1977, the scalloper Donna Lynn was rammed by a 682-foot Israeli cargo ship, the Zim Genova, about 20 miles south-southeast of Shinnecock Inlet, on Long Island, New York. Bernardo "Barney" Lopes was lost over the side. The other twelve members of the crew survived. A search by the Coast Guard and the crews of nearby vessels failed to recover Mr. Lopes' body.
